World Economic Forum 5G Outlook Series Addressing Social Impact

August 6, 2020

Fluxus is a Partner of World Economic Forum’s 5G Global Accelerator Programme, a cross-sector initiative that aims at accelerating a sustainable and inclusive transition to the next generation of mobile networks to respond and recover from the Covid-19 crisis and build better connected, more resilient societies.

The Forum’s newly published white paper in collaboration with PwC, “5G Outlook Series: The Impact of Mobile Technology on the Response to COVID-19“, the first in a series highlights early examples of this technology being used during this time and assesses the outlook for the expanded use of 5G in an era when ubiquitous, high-bandwidth connectivity has become increasingly more critical.

This white paper pointed out that a path forward requires collaboration between governments and industry to enhance 5G infrastructure investments in cities and to maximize economic and social benefits.

Developing countries worry about being left behind in the 5G era. They recognize the consequences of the digital divide, as well as the greater implication of 5G on future economic growth.

This concern was addressed in another white paper “The Impact of 5G: Creating New Value across Industries and Society” that studied the key industrial advances and social impact areas in addition to the drivers of 5G. We have also proposed some solutions in an industry agenda “How 5G can connect the affordable homes of the future“.

The next article in this series will look at the future of 5G against the backdrop of a global transition to a “new normal” involving an ongoing need for physical distancing, changed working patterns and the requirement for many business models to adapt. It will explore issues arising from the easing of lockdown restrictions, the potential market opportunities, and recommendations for how public- and private-sector organizations can make use of 5G technology.

This project is part of the World Economic Forum’s Shaping the Future of Advanced Manufacturing and Production, Shaping the Future of Cities, Infrastructure and Urban Services, Shaping the Future of Digital Economy and New Value Creation, Shaping the Future of Mobility, and Shaping the Future of Technology Governance: IoT, Robotics and Smart Cities Platforms.
